America's Got Talent' Winner Shin Lim's Serious Injury Nearly Cost Him His Magic Career

The 2019 AGT: The Champions winner is Shin Lim, a 26-year-old magician known for his incredible smoke-and-card tricks. Round after round, he worked hard to impress the judges and viewers at home — and round after round he succeeded.
But before Shin Lim became a big star on AGT, he had quite an interesting journey to get to where he is today. Here are the highlights:

Shin Lim was born in Canada.

Like so many of the great performers on AGT this year, Shin Lim came to America to build his career. According to the Straits Time, he was born in Canada and grew up in Singapore until he was 11 years old. Prior to making it big on AGT, Shin Lim lived in Massachusetts. After winning the show though, he'll be temporarily residing and headlining in Las Vegas (and, of course, enjoying that nice $1 million prize).

He was diagnosed with carpal tunnel syndrome seven years ago.

For the longest time, Shin was a huge music fan and studied to play piano starting at age nine. Seven years later, he began practicing magic as a hobby, People reports. But all that changed when, at 20 years old, he was told he had carpal tunnel syndrome. As a result of the diagnosis, Shin was reportedly forced to choose between playing the piano and pursuing magic. In the end, he chose magic. He then promptly dropped out of the School of Music at Lee University in Tennessee where he was studying at the time.

Shin Lim has been on Penn and Teller Fool Us before.

Two times, actually. Shin Lim first appeared on season 2 where he actually managed to fool the two legendary magicians (not an easy feat). For season 4, he came back with new tricks and, once again, stumped the pair.

This Video show about the first time he started his magician in America Got talent.
